Open Access Instrumentation: LC-MS: Waters 2795 HPLC system with dual wavelength UV detector, and ZQ single quadrupole MS with electrospray ionization source. Samples may be introduced to the MS via loop injection or following HPLC on a reverse phase C18 or C8 column. The HPLC columns are 2.1 x 30 mm Agilent Zorbax columns with 3.5 um Stablebond stationary phases. Standard HPLC mobile phases consist of water and acetonitrile with 0.1% formic acid in each. The ZQ open access LC-MS system handles a wide range of compounds, from small molecules to proteins; proteins of MW up to 95 kDa have been successfully analyzed by LC-MS using the C8 column. Usage fees are posted on the rates page. The information covered in the ZQ training is available for download. This material is intended as a reference guide, and does not take the place of the live training session.
GC-MS: HP 6890/5973 GC-MS, single quadrupole MS with electron impact ionization source. The system is equipped with a 8-vial autosampler turret. The GC column is a 30 meter long HP-5MS (5% phenyl)-methylpolysiloxane, with a ID of 0.25 mm and a film thickness of 25 microns. The GC-MS quick-reference guide in .pdf format is available for download. GC-MS analyses requiring over 2 hours of instrument time should be queued to run between 5pm and 8am; when required, reservations may be made up to 1 week in advance. There is no charge to Chemistry department researchers for use of the GC-MS. These open access LC-MS and GC-MS instruments are located in Keck 328, and are available for general use from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. A user account will be provided following a mandatory training session.
